6cm Alaska is not only bigger than its shorter sisters which have been known and popular for years. It is a wobbler created for the sole purpose of catching European catfish. Traditionally, the idea was born by the water, in this case on the Italian Po River where I liked going to for many years. Certainly, my tackle selection included numerous catfish wobblers, among which ones that had never been launched into mass production, although they were really efficient, because, as my friends claimed, "they are so ugly that nobody is going to buy them”. They may have been right…
During one of my expeditions I came across very shallow water as for the Po River conditions, in addition to which almost all fishes bit in areas no deeper than 4-5 metres, often even in shallower ones. I hardly managed in those conditions, fishing with the use of wobblers diving up to 8-10 metres and deeper, so, after coming back, I started to carve something that would allow me to get to catfish in such conditions. Another motivator was the fact that my friend M. Szymański started regular trolling for catfish in Polish rivers, and, for all we know, neither the Vistula, nor the Odra River belong to the group of the deepest rivers.
Firstly, I was going to create a completely new group of bait, but finally I decided that there was no point in preaching to the converted. We all know that catfish particularly like compact, medium length wobblers whose action is rather fast. All these conditions are met by Alaska wobblers, and therefore all we had to do was enlarge Alaska family by greater sizes and adjust the helm to enable its diving to an appropriate depth (between 3.5 and 5 metres) and the undisturbed work even on a thick catfish line. Having produced the first line, I sent tens of wobblers to my fishing friends I trusted, as I knew that they were going to point out my possible mistakes.
The tests lasted for the whole season, during which I used the new Alaska to catch numerous beautiful specimens, e.g. a more than two-metre long catfish specimen caught by 15 years’ old Szymon Szymański. I caught 4 catfish specimens within six hours using this wobbler during the first expedition to the Vistula. Apart from catfish, other fish species willingly attacked the "big Berta" as Alaska was referred to by one of my mates. For instance, my friends from Łódź numerously told me about pike and zander caught in the course of trolling in Zalew Sulejowski artificial lake.
Obviously, the depth of the wobbler’s dive depends on several factors, such as the thickness of the line used, the speed of the boat, the distance of casting the wobbler, etc., however, as I have already written, it usually fluctuates higher, between 3.5 and 5 metres, which, I think, is the optimum depth in Polish fisheries. 8 cm models of Alaska, which easily dive into the depth of 9-10 metres will be available soon for those who like travelling to distant fisheries, such as Po or Ebro Rovers, or fish in deep artificial basins. According to tests, this size is equally willingly attacked by whiskered predators, as the 6 cm model, and such attacks are what I wish to all our customers.
